David Langford Wins Doc Weir Award

The Doc Weir Award for service to fandom was voted to David Langford during Levitation, Eastercon 2024, this past weekend.

eFanzine’s complete history of the Doc Weir Award begins:

The Doc Weir Award was set up in 1963 in memory of fan Arthur Rose (Doc) Weir, who had died two years previously. Weir was a relative newcomer to fandom, he discovered it late in life – but in the short time of his involvement he was active in a number of fannish areas. In recognition of this, the Award is sometimes seen as the “Good Guy” Award; something for “The Unsung Heroes”.

The award, voted by attending members of Eastercon and presented at the convention, is a silver cup which each winner keeps for a year. It is engraved with the earliest winners’ names, and since space on the cup itself ran out other names have been engraved on silver plates mounted on the cup’s storage box.

  1. Congratulations to Dave Langford, one of the first UK fans I met, most likely in 1987 at Con’spiracy. A classy guy and an unsung hero of UK fandom — till now! Look forward to saying Hi in Glasgow!

  2. Mm.. congrats indeed to the ever redoubtable Dave Langford (another “DL”!). In fact on hearing at Eastercon 2024/Levitation about his win, I’d thought (as many others do) that he’d already won that (equivalant to the annual Worldcon “Big Heart” Award). But no, he had not. So indeed Dave, yes, well deserved. His long running and multi Hugo award winning Ansible website (search: “news(dot)ansible(dot)uk”) remains an essential tool re much SF+F news/views/Conventions etc. One interesting aspect re the annual Doc Weir Award is that the winner each year (and it was moi in 2005) has to insure the cup (it is silver) and, at his/her own cost, have his/her own name added thereon. One other humorous aspect is that since c2000 or so, there is no more room on the cup itself to add any more winners. So the containing (wooden) box has had metal plates added on the outside and future winner names have been added thereon. The joke I use is thus we later winners are in fact “Doc Box” winners not “Doc Weir”!!
