Semi-final round voting has begun in the Goodreads Choice Awards: The Best Books 2018 and will continue through November 11.
There are 21 categories overall. Goodreads recommended 15 books in the opening round and allowed write-ins, which have filled another five spots on the semi-final ballot. In the Science Fiction and Fantasy categories these write-ins made the cut —
SCIENCE FICTION
- The Calculating Stars by Mary Robinette Kowal
- The Consuming Fire by John Scalzi
- The Gone World by Tom Sweterlitsch
- Space Opera by Catherynne Valente
- Star Wars: Thrawn: Alliances by Timothy Zahn
FANTASY
- Time’s Convert by Deborah Harkness
- Magic Triumphs by Ilona Andrews
- The Girl in the Tower by Katherine Arden
- Foundryside by Robert Jackson Bennett
- Bloody Rose by Nicholas Eames
So here are the books in the running in these categories of genre interest —
Lots of great books this year. Surprised by how many of the authors I’m aquatinted with.
Sanderson’s Skyward was just released today.
I’m quite impressed that some of of my write ins made it through – The Calculating Stars and Foundryside, plus The Labyrinth Index by Charles Stross has appeared in the horror category. Also great to see Space Opera getting through as a write in for SF.
Of genre interest in Debut Author, Toni Adeyemi and RF Kuang have now been joined by CL Polk (Witchmark).
Meanwhile in Best of the Best they seem to have culled the section down rather than expanding it – unsurprisingly this means all the non-fiction has dropped out. YA F&SF seems to be the most successful category, courtesy of 3 Sarah Maas books. Others of genre interest still in the category include Andy Weir, GRRM, Neil Gaiman, Stephen King, Suzanne Collins, Pierce Brown.
Yet more evidence that I don’t read the good stuff.
