Neil Gaiman Exits Good Omens, Final Season Reduced to Single Episode

Good Omens, paused in production following sexual assault allegations against creator Neil Gaiman, is now moving forward with neither Neil Gaiman nor his company the Blank Corporation any longer involved reports Deadline. However, it will end with a single 90-minute episode rather than the planned third season series.

Michael Sheen and David Tennant, who play the angel Aziraphale and demon Crowley, respectively, will return for the one-off television movie, which will begin shooting in early 2025 in Scotland…

Gaiman contributed to the writing of the series finale but will not be working on the production and his production company the Blank Corporation is no longer involved. A new writer is expected to finish up the work, although insiders said that deal has not been closed….

Gaiman had served as writer, showrunner and executive producer.

The new season is produced by Amazon MGM Studios, BBC Studios Productions and Narrativia (representing Terry Pratchett’s estate).

While Good Omens has found a way ahead, two other productions adapting Gaiman’s work have not. Dead Boy Detectives, based on a comic by Gaiman, who was one of the series’ executive producers, was cancelled by Netflix after one season. And last month Disney paused development of its adaptation of The Graveyard Book for a variety of reasons, including the claims about Gaiman.

  1. @Lis
That shouldn’t affect the production, once he’s out. (I really hate punishing the non-involved.)

  2. @P J Evans–I hate punishing the uninvolved, too. But there’s a real cost to being associated with Gaiman, now, even now that he’s out. If he weren’t out, if he had made it too expensive to get him out, they’d have had to drop it completely, with no finish.

Maybe if Terry Pratchett were around to keep his own co-authorship in the public mind, and be involved in a third season, we could have more. But with Good Omens completely Gaiman’s project now, it’s not going to happen.

  3. As someone who adored season one of Good Omens (it is also one of my favorite books) but was so disappointed in season two overall (not just the ending), I’d pretty much decided I didn’t care what happened with season three even before any news about Gaiman had surfaced. I just hope for the fans that do care that there will be acceptable closure with the story.

  4. When series 2 was being promoted Gaiman said that series 3 would be based on material that had been prepared by him and Terry for a follow up novel that was never written. Series 2 was pure Gaiman and intended to link series 1 with the unused material for series 3. Given this, I am hoping that what we get in series 3 is basically the Pratchett material with minimal Gaiman.

  5. So back when Hill House still existed, they published a very nice edition of American Gods which they sent Green Man Review a copy. It was of those authors preferred texts.

Tucked in with it was a slim volume called simply A Screenplay as according to the publisher’s note Neil and Terry couldn’t refer to a film treatment by that name as they didn’t have the rights to it as a film but, yes, it was Good Omens.

It was a fun read as they very obviously wanted a film of it to be made.

I don’t remember if they actually used the name Good Omens anywhere in it. I don’t think so.
