196 thoughts on “What Did You Nominate For The 2018 Hugo Awards?

  1. A couple of notes I want to make. Firstly, I decided not to nominate anyone who has either won in that category in the past 5 years or been nominated in the 3 out of the past years (on the main ballot, Retro didn’t mind) in order just to make myself read more widely. Secondly, I said last year I was going to originally look at what method was the best predictor of what was on the final ballot. I didn’t do a post as the best ended up being was just my qualitative feeling of fandom (which was about 70% right). So as a bit of fun going to try to (probably wrongly) guess what some of the actual finalists will be:

  2. I guess I’ll start. I had quite a few not-getting-around-to-reading fails, including a lot of stuff from Asimovs/F&SF, and some of the choices in shorter fiction pretty much involved a blindfold and a finger stab as a tie breaker….

I changed my ballot at the last minute to include The Grim Tidings Podcast. As a result, The Post Atomic Horror Podcast with Ron “Algar” Watt & Matt Rowbotham got bumped off the list. PAH has become a bit repetitive in their discussions of more recent Star Trek properties while GTP had some outstanding author interviews last year. And there are only 5 nomination slots to be filled.

  12. @Ceev —

Hey, good on ya for voting for KJ Charles. I haven’t read that particular book yet, but I like some of her writing very much. 🙂

As for me, my votes could have gone a lot of different ways. I didn’t have a new sff novel that totally blew me away this year (I only had one 5-star read this year, Lincoln in the Bardo, and I decided it really didn’t fit with the Hugos), but there were a lot of very good ones — so I had a hard time deciding on my final list. And I left a lot of categories blank, I’m sad to say — but I thought it was better to leave them to the folks who had spent more time researching those areas!

I had a lot of fun picking for best pro artist, though, and ended up with these:

    Gregory Manchess
    Eddie Mendoza
    Jamie Jones
    Jon Foster
    Richard Anderson

I still love both Julie Dillon and Jon Picacio, but decided the others were more deserving of exposure this year!

Oh, and Katherine Arden and Nicholas Eames on the Campbell. I also put Ada Palmer on the Campbell ballot even though I know she isn’t eligible anymore — I just couldn’t resist! 😉

  13. My ballot was also awfully sparse this year, but included:

Stone in the Skull by Elizabeth Bear
Raven Stratagem by Yoon Ha Lee
    Provenance by Ann Leckie

(Those may have literally been the only 2017-published novels I’ve read.)

Plus a bunch of podcasts, including:

Appendix N Book Club (a couple of guys talking about all of the books/authors listed in the original Appendix N inspirational reading list in the original Dungeon Master’s Guide)
Hall of Blue Illumination (monthly discussion about my favorite fictional world, M.A.R. Barker’s Tekumel)

  14. Best Novel

  15. Unduly pleased that my 15 short fiction nominations came from 10 different sources. And yet I can easily come up with the same number of sources I’m barely/not following. A good time for short fiction.

    Colossal

Glad to see Colossal on someone else’s list. A couple of us had nominated it last year (because we’d seen it at TIFF in 2016), so Amanda and I almost neglected it on this year’s ballot, until we realized that it was only released in the U.S. in 2017.

Iain M. Banks by Paul Kincaid

    Same here. Excellent book.

I’m just going to note that if “My Favourite Thing Is Monsters” doesn’t make the Best Graphic Story ballot this year, I’ll be very sad. It was the best thing I saw or read in 2017 in any category.

    Here’s my blog post: Link
And what NPR said about it: “A Dazzling Tour De Force”
And BoingBoing: “My Favorite Thing is Monsters may just be the best graphic novel of 2017”

If you have yet to read it, I can only say that it’s spectacular. And since the second half of the two-volume set becomes available in August, there’s still a chance to nominate Emil Ferris next year.

  22. Reading over everyone’s lists it’s interesting to see what a vast array of nominees there are, including some I’m going to go back and pick up now. I didn’t know Emma Newman had a new novel out last year. How did I miss that? Here’s my list.

  24. I’m just going to note that if “My Favourite Thing Is Monsters” doesn’t make the Best Graphic Story ballot this year, I’ll be very sad. It was the best thing I saw or read in 2017 in any category.

It was one of my 5:

My Favorite Thing is Monsters, Emil Ferris, Fantagraphics
Batman: The Dark Knight: Master Race, Frank Miller, Brian Azzarello, Andy Kubert and Klaus Janson, DC

B.P.R.D: Hell on Earth Volume 1, Mike Mignola, John Arcudi, Guy Davis and Tyler Crook, Dark Horse

It would be nice to see Mike Mignola’s name on the ballot for a comic book. That has never happened before, though he did get nominated for the movie Hellboy II: The Golden Army.

  31. Rich Lynch, no women met your standards, I see. Oops, 1/2 of one nom. My mistake!

  32. I participated but didn’t nominate much. I read a fair number of eligible novels and novellas but not much at shorter lengths, and there are quite a few novels and novellas as well that I have on hand or on hold at the library but haven’t read yet. So these are the things I did read in a couple of categories that I thought belonged on the ballot, plus a favourite series.

    Your nominations for Best Novel:

New York 2140 Kim Stanley Robinson
The Moon and The Other John Kessel

  33. @Lenore — Hey, that seems kind of catty. Myself, I neither know nor care what the gender breakdown is on my nom list.

Personally, I vote for the works I like best — not for the most PC authors. Lately my noms have ended up including a lot of women and minority authors, but that isn’t why I voted for them.

  34. Lenore Jones: Rich Lynch, no women met your standards, I see. Oops, 1/2 of one nom. My mistake!

Since women won in 100% of the Hugo categories last year maybe he’s just trying to give men a shot for a change. 😉

  35. H, I just read Clark Gifford’s Body this year after having it on a tbr shelf for years. Interesting novel. I don’t do the retro Hugo thing but I think it would be a good finalist.

Valoise, I think you got the author of Luna: Wolf Moon wrong. It should be Ian McDonald. Another book I haven’t read.

  36. Here’s mine. (I’m not into podcasts, and I just didn’t have enough time to make an informed run at the artists or best long form editor.)

  38. Regarding Retro Hugo nominations — what is it about Batman that makes it eligible for an SF/F award?

  39. Mark: Very early Batman had pulpish supernatural and superscience elements.

Surely his gadgets, especially the Batmobile, would be considered fantasy/science-fictional?

  40. @JJ

Agreed – the superscience elements stuck around. You can argue whether they make it SF or just technothriller though, whereas Batman v vampire is pretty explicitly SFnal.

  41. I left out most of the Editor, Dramatic Presentation, Artist and Fanzine categories based on lack of time. I was pretty happy with the breadth of 2017 work I got to read this last year, many thanks to all of the Filers whose recommendations led me to things I might otherwise have missed.

  42. Agreed – the superscience elements stuck around. You can argue whether they make it SF or just technothriller though, whereas Batman v vampire is pretty explicitly SFnal.

Eventually, Batman was going to other planets. And even today, he deals with near-immortals resurrected by The Lazarus Pit, Kryptonians (and not just Superman dropping by), beings of sentient clay and other stuff that seems pretty far beyond a technothriller’s domain.
