10 thoughts on “2016 Emmy Award Nominations

  1. Tatiana Maslany finally feels the love after FOUR seasons. I wonder who would she dress as for an award show?

  2. Michael J. Walsh: So … who are the leads in Game of Thrones??

They were decapitated in the first season, weren’t they?

  3. The directing and editing for the last two episodes of GoT were pretty exceptional, imho.

@ Michael J. Walsh-The Night (sic) King is the only lead in the series and he’s very upset about not getting any nominations. I believe the series finale plot will be about his reaction to that slight. :-9

  4. Jessica Jones got robbed, in several categories. Rufus Sewell in The Man in the High Castle got robbed. I’m angry on these people’s behalf.

  5. Sense8 has great theme music and I’m happy it’s getting some recognition.

Supporting Actress – Lena Headey was amazing, but why pick Emilia Clarke and Maisie Williams over Sophie Turner?

And I’m very miffed at the absence of David Tennant and Krysten Ritter.

(And also Michelle Gomez and Peter Capaldi, but Doctor Who’s never been nommed for an Emmy so that was a long shot.)

  6. @Bartimaeus: Yes, Sophie Turner has really come into her own as an actor over this season. When she did her reunion scenes with Kit Harrington and it was finally time for her character to show some emotional availability, she really sold it. I would say that in terms of range, Maisie Williams had an opportunity to display more this season than Turner did – like, actually feeling like she was in a comfortable place for the first time in years during some of her interactions with the theater troupe – which is because the writers put her in those positions. Nevertheless she crushed those opportunities.

I would’ve nominated Williams and Turner and left Clarke off the shortlist. Clarke is reasonably effective in a narrow band of affect. But she’s not more than that, and I don’t think she’s expanded her toolkit since the start of the series the way Headey, Williams and Turner have. And someone is taking up Rachael Taylor’s spot. I would toss any of the three GoT nominees for Taylor’s sake. Her absence from the list is nearly as great an offense as the snub to Rufus Sewell.

Okay, that overstates. Very little in the world is as terrible as leaving Rufus Sewell off the Emmy list this year*.

[*Note: This is exaggerating for effect!]

  7. @Bartimaeus
Dr. Who has never won an Emmy because it was never eligible until this year (through BBC America). Aside from the technical categories, only Capaldi (Lead Actor), Moffatt (writing for one episode), and Talalay (directing for one episode) were submitted, so getting any finalists was rather a longshot.

  8. @Michael J. Walsh
Lead Actors in Game of Thrones? Through 6 seasons and 60 episodes, not one person has been on screen even 5 hours total. Peter Dinklage leads with about 294 minutes across 54 episodes, followed by Kit Harington at 268/49, Emilia Clark 222/49, Lena Headey 202/52, Sophie Turner 200/47, Maisie Williams 189/47, and NIkolaj Coster-Waldau 163/43. From there, screentime plummets. As per @Mike Glyer, Sean Bean received the highest average screen time with almost 10 minutes per episode in the first season, but even that isn’t much compared to usual lead nominees.

  9. I believe you mean American Horror Story: Hotel — not AHS: Freak Show — in your early bullet list. In fact, several of the entries in that bullet list do not seem to track with what you show later in the post. (Check Gotham, for instance.)
