The 2019 Philip K. Dick Award nominees as selected by the judges were announced January 12 by the Philadelphia Science Fiction Society and the Philip K. Dick Trust. First prize and any special citations will be revealed on Friday, April 19, at Norwescon 42 in SeaTac, Washington.

The annual Philip K. Dick Award recognizes distinguished science fiction published in paperback original form in the United States during the previous calendar year.
The award is sponsored by the Philadelphia Science Fiction Society and the Philip K. Dick Trust and the award ceremony is sponsored by the Northwest Science Fiction Society.
Last year’s winner was Bannerless by Carrie Vaughn (Mariner/Houghton Mifflin Harcourt). The 2018 judges are Madeline Ashby, Brian Attebery, Christopher Brown, Rosemary Edghill, and Jason Hough (chair).

I was tipped off earlier today by author Adam-Troy Castro that 84K by Claire North was a VERY notable and award worthy novel this year. And, love and behold, there it is!. I’ll be picking that up at my local bookstore as soon as the snowstorm subsides…
Both 84K and Time Was are well worth reading.
84K is a murder mystery set in a more extreme extrapolated version of today’s world, where healthcare and legal justice are available only to the wealthy, and people with the means to do so can legally buy their way out of punishment for their crimes.
It’s an interesting and well-written book, but perhaps more than a bit too close to the real world right now to make for comfortable reading.
Claire North under the name of Kate Griffin wrote the amazing Matthew Swift, Midnight Mayor of London series. If you like well crafted urban fantasy, I highly recommend this series. Both the characters and the setting are believable, something rare in that genre.
84K is fantastic! Haven’t read any of the others yet.
Here in 2774, our feline overlords have mandated a purring break for all inferior species. It is rather relaxing.
I’ve read only the Vandana Singh collection, but I like it a lot.
I thought Time Was was very good.
