Best Fan Artist Solution?

After seeing the Best Fan Artist Hugo result Taral Wayne’s comeback line was: “That’s what you get when you let people who read vote on pictures.”

How about if the rules were changed so that voters, to prove they’re qualified to have an opinion, had to indicate their choice by drawing the artist they’re voting for? Then I’d be worried the Hugo would always go to “Who the heck is that?”

  1. I’ve always thought that for the Best Fanzine Hugo, the titles of the fanzines and names of the editors should both be listed in random order and nobody should be allowed to vote inthe category who can’t match them up correctly.

  2. It’s been six months since the above was posted, so I don’t know if anyone will see this. I only just stumbled over the comment myself, and not quite sure what to make of it, considering I was the one who was lucky enough to win the Best Fan Artist this year. While I have won in the past, I figured the fact that I had been nominazted but lostt for about 14 years straight before getting it again this year is a sign that the category certainly isn’t being overwhelmed by any single artist.
Since I am a huge fan of both Taral’s artwork and his writing, and have both nominated and voted for him for the Hugo in the past when I could afford Worldcon membership, I PREFER to think he was actually trying to be complimentary that, after having lost for over a decade, I had won again. Yeah, I’ll go with that.
