  1. I haven’t done a precise count. And a few books are in more than one category. However the HVP has at least a dozen novels, which is quite a showing.

  2. For anyone needing a copy of the graphic novel Far Sector, I was able to borrow a copy from my local library via Hoopla, so check out your local libraries digital resources.

  3. Pingback: A Trio of Links and News | Cora Buhlert

  4. Also, a heads up, we’ve observed two bugs in the system that are affecting some people, but not everyone:

some supporting members are able to vote but do not have access to the packet. I believe I know the solution to this, but I need to be at the non-work computer to deal with it.
some voters are receiving repeated ballot report emails after voting. No cause is known at this time, I’m hoping to sort it out tonight as well.

  5. I got 185 separate ballot confirmation e-mails this evening! My last came through just seven minutes ago, so just before you said it was fixed.

  6. The Word version of the short story “Mr. Death” by Alix Harrow may accidentally dox her; there’s an address, phone number, and email account in the header, which do not appear in the .pdf verson.

I strongly encourage Chicon to check this and remove-and-reupload if appropriate. I’ve also emailed Chicon directly about this issue.

Mike, if you feel this post should be removed, please do so.

  7. Does anyone have a list of what Sarah T. Guan edited for Long Form? I don’t blame anyone for not contributing to the Hugo Packet, but it’s impossible to rank an editor if you don’t know what she’s edited.

  8. Does anyone know why the Darcie Little Badger book is crossed out under Lodestar?

    Withdrawn? Disqualified?

On a separate note I was delighted to receive 4 additional novels in the best editor long form packet – there’s A Marvellous Light by Freya Marske, The Chosen and the Beautiful by Nghi Vo, Master of Djinn by P Djeli Clark, and Stareater by Kerstin Hall

  9. Chicon has removed Alix’s personal information. Mike, feel free to remove my post on the subject. Kudos to Chicon for fast response on a Saturday morning!

  10. Kate T: The reason is what is given in my explanation — the 4 finalists that are lined out have no material in the Hugo Voter Packet.

  11. I’m gonna just post my beef with the best series packet once more, in the hopes that someone will hear me in the future:

All I want is a list of books/stories in the series in a suggested reading order, in addition to whatever else is provided for the packet.

That’s all. It could be a simple text list. It could be an elaborate list with added descriptions. I don’t care, I just would like the packet to include a list of works that are considered part of the series. A freakin’ series name isn’t enough, and while “just Google it” is such a polite response, it’s also often not adequate. A single page would be so much more useful and helpful to voters, so why doesn’t anyone include one?

  12. @Mike Glyer: Thanks for posting this! I’m way behind on so much, and hadn’t realized the Hugo packet was out already. 😀 And many thanks to Worldcon, the Hugo Voter Packet team, and the creators & publishers for contributing works to the packet!

I found one discrepancy with your list. Sarah T. Guan does have files in the BE:Long folder. There’s a DOCX & PDF of her Editorial Philosophy, including a list of works edited; and there’s a PDF with the first few chapters of three works edited. Perhaps this was added after you downloaded the packet???

I also noticed a few oddities:

#1 The first time I downloaded BE:Short and BDP:Short, there were files missing, but I got no error opening the ZIP files. I re-downloaded and got all the files. Hopefully I didn’t miss anything in any other ZIP files. This is a new one on me; usually I see a clue in my browser if a download doesn’t complete, and have trouble opening the ZIP file.

#2 Some Escape Pod files are in a folder in the Best Fan Writer folder. They have a folder there as well as in the Best Semiprozine folder, but they contain different files. Just me?

#3 The Strange Horizons folder is in the Best Fan Writer folder instead of the Best Semiprozine folder. Just me?

#4 FYI, the folder for “The Expanse” has bios & photos of the creators, in addition to the trailer link in the index PDF for BDP:Short.

Lessons learned: (a) redownload if something doesn’t contain what I expected; and (b) if something’s still missing, poke around in other folders. 😉

  13. Hello Kendall: I can only say that I don’t have semiprofiles in Best Fan Writer, how big was your Fan Writer file?

    Re Series:

    The Green Bone Saga:
    Jade City
    Jade War
    Jade Legacy
There is a standalone: The Jade Setter of Janloon but it was published this year and shouldn’t count for the Hugo

    The Kingston Cycle

    Witchmark
    Stormsong
    Soulstar

    Merchant Princes:

    The Family Trade
    The Hidden Family
    The Clan Corperate
    The Mercants War
    The Revolution Business
    The Trade of Queens
    Empire Games
    Dark State
    Invisible Sun

    Terra Ignota:

    Too Like the Lightning
    Seven Surrenders
    The Will to Battle
    Perhaps the Stars

    Wayward Children:

    Every Heart a Doorway
Down Among the Sticks and Bones
    Beneath the Sugar Sky
    In an Absent Dream
Juice Like Wounds (shortfiction on tor.com)
    Come Tumbling Down
    Across the Green Grass Fields
Where the Drowned Girls Go (2022)
Lost in the Moment and Found (2023)

The World of the White Rat: (I am not sure if that order is correct, or if there even is one, can someone please help who knows more about this series?)

    Clockwork Boys
    The Wonder Engine
    Swordheart
    Paladin’s Grace
    Paladin’s Strength
    Paladin’s Hope

  15. Does anyone have a list of what Sarah T. Guan edited for Long Form? I don’t blame anyone for not contributing to the Hugo Packet, but it’s impossible to rank an editor if you don’t know what she’s edited.

    Seconded!

  16. Thank you, StefanB.

I just wish they’d include a list in the packet. It would make it much easier. I’m presuming that the two last Wayward Children books aren’t part of this nomination? I also was under the impression (false?) that the only books in the White Rat series were the Paladin books… now I’m even more confused. Which is why I wish they would include a list of books considered part of the series in the packet so there’s no confusion. Sorry. It’s such a small peeve of mine, but sincere.

  17. @Laura “Tegan” Gjovaag:

That was the info I could find, copied mostly from list on the internet.
The last two Wayward Children books aren’t part of the nomination.
Sorry about the World of the White Ratseries, I don’t know enough about that one to answer the question.

Re list, that one was great 2 years ago, when Seanan McQuires Incryptseries got one. Such a list would be helpful. I tend to have to search the Internet for the order of the books (sometimes even for trilogies. So yeah for future nominees, a list in reading order of your series is a nice tool.

  18. @StefanB: Weird, my computer must’ve done something weird when I unZIP’d several files at once. I’ve never seen that happen before! I removed the mobi and azw3 files already, so I’m not sure how big it was originally, but I do have 6 Fan Writer folders with one file each (well, in multiple formats for most of them) and then in Alex Brown’s folder, I have 11 PDFs. I have 6 Semiprozine folders; most have one file (multiple formats), but Escape Pod has 7 MP3s and an ebook, while FIYAH has . . . 4 ebooks in various formats, it looks like.

@Michael, et al.: Sarah T. Guan has information in the packet; you may want to re-download the Best Editor Long Form if you don’t have it. Her list there (but there’s more info than this, and a sample) is as follows; note the word “include,” so this may not be a complete list of her 2022 edited works.

Works I edited that published in 2022 include:
    • The All-Consuming World by Cassandra Khaw
    • Folklorn by Angela Mi-Young Hur
    • Jade Legacy by Fonda Lee
    • Rise of the Red Hand by Olivia Chadha

  19. The first six Merchant Princes books were revised and reissued as three longer books (The Bloodline Feud; The Traders’ War; The Revolution Trade), and Stross’s FAQ on his website advises reading the revised version. (I don’t know why the voter packet instead includes the first book of the original version, given that advice.)

The World of the White Rat series is made up of multiple sub-series. The Paladin books form the Saint of Steel sub-series.

  20. StefanB’s list of the White Rat books is confirmed at the author’s website.

(See “What order should I read your books in”)

(I have all of them, but I didn’t know for sure if that was the complete list)

  21. @Kendall, thank you. It appears Chicon has updated the packet.

Guan’s packet raises another question for me though: both she and Nivia Evans list “Jade Legacy” as a book they edited. I’m only a 2nd-time Hugo voter, so I was wondering, is this a rare or even first-time occurrence to have nominated editors who have worked on the same title(s)? I haven’t gone through all the editors’ packets completely, but I’m certain this wasn’t the case for last year.

  22. @Michael: Glad to help!

We’ve seen two editors like that before. I believe it’s more common when one’s in country A and one’s in country B (usually U.S. & U.K.). But in this case, I believe it’s because Guan moved in August 2019 from Orbit to Erewhon and Evans is currently with Orbit. So proibably Guan used to be the editor and Evans took it over. Wild best guess from me, based on location/companies/dates. 😉

ETA: And apologies if I guessed wrong here. ::bows::

  23. @Kendall, thank you for the update on Sarah T. Guan; I’ll re-download the packet.
