As planned, Joe Haldeman had a tracheostomy on October 6. Gay Haldeman told SFF.net readers that on October 7 doctors reduced Joe’s sedation by half, then during the day he “focused his eyes on me, squeezed my hand, smiled at a nurse’s joke…. It sure was good to see he’s still there.”
