  5. Raj Bhaskar: I enjoyed your comments about the works on your Hugo ballot.

I just took a look at the Iain M. Banks book of Culture drawings and you seem to be right that it would open the eligibility window for a Best Series nomination.

  10. Some Desperate Glory, Infinity Gate, House of Open Wounds in novel.
    Final Architecture in Series
Thorn Hedge, And Put Away these Childish Things in novella.

Some other things. Some people who post here in Fan Writer.

  11. Are the question marks from the Chinese characters in the interface, or what?

I didn’t get to nominate; I was unexpectedly busy, and in fact I’m going to have to transfer my membership anyway.

  12. That seems a good bet — that the question marks are from Chinese characters. Although I was able to get WordPress to fix the character table for posts, I haven’t gotten it fixed for comments. I’ve spent the last year or so diverted by a pointless effort to get them to send subscriber notifications for every post.

  13. If any of the novels win, I have a lot of reading to do! I have no idea how to watch Godzilla Minus One. 🙂

    Moniquill Blackgoose,

  15. Lfex: Astounding… Moniquill Blackgoose

It’s my understanding that Blackgoose is ineligible due to the 2020 publication of a novel under the name Monique Poirier.

  16. My partner Juli and I nominated (checks notes)…OH SHIT, I got the GMT time wrong on this side of the Atlantic!!!!! GAH!!!!!

Well, nothing this year, my bad. But good luck to all of the potential nominees! I look forward to seeing who gets nominated this year!

    Best Wishes,
    CMB

  17. To some degree, I feel that would be telling and if too many people did it there’d be an unfortunate loss of suspense. That said…

It may not be a lifelong thing but I decided not to nominate anything for Best Novel by a previous winner in that category – sorry Martha Wells but if I’d nominated you for everything you arguably deserve, I would have had a very hard time deciding what to do with my last couple of slots.

I’m very out of it with respect to video games but nevertheless nominated XKCD 2765: Escape Speed for Best Game/Interactive Experience.

I see at Raj’s blog that he nominated Polite Society for BDPLF. Maybe I should have also – it’s utterly delightful and I certainly enjoyed it more than at the very least two or three of the works I did nominate – but in much the same way I consider REAMDE a present day technothriller rather than science fiction and every stunt work/CGI-assisted action film in which someone is depicted performing some physically impossible feat not by that alone automatically a work of fantasy, I have trouble with classifying it as SFF.

  18. JJ: It’s my understanding that Blackgoose is ineligible due to the 2020 publication of a novel under the name Monique Poirier.

Well, tough luck. Too late to change it. Does it make the novel itsefl also ineligible?

  21. Cat, funny thing; Nicholas and Cassidy only told me that they wanted NomNom to do that on Monday.

Made for a stressful evening or two this week, lemme tell you!

  22. (Also, as an aside, I’m seeing a lot of “??” in what seems to be peoples’ copied emails from the system. That is surprising to me, and I would like to know what those are. If someone would kindly forward me one of those emails, I’d be grateful. You can email me at [email protected], and you might want to post here that you did it so I don’t get copies of everyone‘s nominations 😀 )

  23. Chris R says Cat, funny thing; Nicholas and Cassidy only told me that they wanted NomNom to do that on Monday.

Made for a stressful evening or two this week, lemme tell you!

I’ve no idea when I realised that it was not working, so that may be my fault as much as anything. And you are dealing with an individual who can forget what day of the week it is within minutes of knowing what day of the week it was. Ahhh, severe brain trauma. The anti-gift.

Again my deepest thanks for finding a solution so I could send my nominations in even if I forgot two people here that I should add in to the fan writer noms. Can you email me and I’ll tell you who that is please if that’s possible?

  24. I had high hopes for Translation State but sadly found it to be kind of paint by numbers. In case anyone wants to change my mind.

I didn’t nominate because I’m burned out on Hugos – as opposed to last year when I didn’t nominate because I had high hopes of instead of nominating, rather being introduced to great stuff by other fans from across the world, and my hopes were dashed. I wonder how many did.

  25. @Cat I don’t have any control over the nominations process, so I can’t help ya there. I don’t run NomNom, I’m just building it 😀 Until Thursday this week there was no process for the Admin to manually enter a ballot for a member who was experiencing login problems.

(I want to be clear; Glasgow’s membership / login system is emphatically not mine and I take no responsibility for it! 🙂 )

  26. Chris R: While I (alas, as noted above) can not check this fully, it has been noted that Glasgow had translated the nominating interface into Chinese (mainly for the sake of the eligible Cengdu members), and it seems likely that the confirmation emails include the apporipriate characters, which (it is certain, as noted above) would be munged by the File770 comments.

EDIT: Sorry, only after I posted this it turned out that the comments have already gone ro this independently. Still, it feels a waste to delete the commmment completely; just in case…

  27. @Mike: thanks. This is the first time I’ve nominated for the Hugos and I enjoyed adding the little comments on my thought processes (even if it took much longer than I expected!)

    (Spoiler for Polite Society coming)
@JonT: I thought that the cloning stuff made it science fictional enough to count. The wire fighting was just sugar on top! Still, that’s one for the administrator to sort out :?-?)

As someone who tries to vote in every category (except for Best Game, since I know literally nothing about any of the options this year), I find it very frustrating trying to figure out eligbility in a lot of the categories as an individual. I know that a bunch of the things I nominated are probably ineligible in the categories where I put them, thus preventing me from nominating other things which ARE eligible. I really wish there was a better system for this.

  40. I didn’t nominate for the Hugos this year, but if I had, my nominations probably would have included:

    Novels:
    The Infinite, by Ada Hoffmann
    Thirsty Animals, by Rachelle Atalla
The Shadow Cabinet, by Juno Dawson
The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi, by Shannon Chakraborty
    The Twice-Drowned Saint, by C. S. E Cooney

    Novella:
    Thornhedge, by T. Kingfisher
Island of Whispers, by Frances Hardinge
And Put Away Childish Things, by Adrian Tchaikovsky

    Novelette:
Prince Hat Underground, by Kelly Link

    Series:
    The Outside, by Ada Hoffmann
The Final Architecture, by Adrian Tchaikovsky
    Imperial Radch, by Ann Leckie

    YA:
The Stolen Heir, by Holly Black
If Tomorrow Doesn’t Come, by Jen St. Jude
The Spirit Bares Its Teeth, by Andrew Joseph White

  41. This is my list. There is some additional commentary over on my blog where this was first posted.

    Novels
    -The Ferryman by Justin Cronin
-Yumi and the Nightmare Painter by Brandon Sanderson
-House of Gold by C.T. Rwizi
-Stand Alone by John Van Stry

    Novelette
-Metamorphoses at the Gate by Lysander Arden appearing in Cirsova, Issue #16/Fall 2023
-Fossils of Truth and Grace by E.E. King appearing in Cirsova, Issue #16/Fall 2023

    Graphic Novels
    -Drive by Dave Kellett
-The Order of the Stick by Rich Burlew
-Bloom County 2023 by Berkeley Breathed

    Dramatic Presentation – short form
-Long, Long Time – Last of Us, Episode 3 – HBO – A great episode that was part of a much longer story.

    Dramatic Presentation – long form
-Last of Us – HBO – I found the entire series to be great. As the series is one long story arc, I believe it qualifies for the long-form category.

    Fancast
-Cinema Story Origins – Paul Hale.
    -Casually Comics – Sasha Wood.

    Best Series
-The Eden Chronicles by S.M. Anderson. Book 5 (The Wrong Game) dropped this year.

[I also want to point out that I am 100% opposed to nominating any series based novel in the “Best Novel” category unless a) it is the first in the series or b) all previous entries have been nominated and won in the “Best Novel” category. The “Best Series” is where series-based genre fiction belongs. And no where else.]

    Short Story
-The Dusk Next Door by Mark Pelligrini appearing in Cirsova, Issue #16/Fall 2023

    Best Editor, Short Form
    -P. Alexander – Cirsova
    -Beth Tabler – Grimdark Magazine

    Dann

  42. Megan: are you aware of the Hugo Spreadsheet of Doom (https://bit.ly/hugoaward2024)? Very helpful both as a recommendation spreadsheet but also in crowd-sourcing eligibility research. I double check everything on the spreadsheet before nominating.

My difficulty is when I come across something late enough that when I add it to the spreadsheet there isn’t enough time for other people to point out ineligibility issues. Astounding eligibility in particular I find hard to research – ISFDB will usually tell you if an author has previous publications but I haven’t found anywhere that lists the pay rate or the circulation numbers, both of which affects whether a work is a professional publication and thus starts the eligibility clock. If anyone has any suggestions that would be great!
