Faux Scroll 8/23/18 The Fan Who Was Thursday

(1) WHAT’S UP DOC? They’re going to put heart pacemaker in me this afternoon. I’ve been able to get online for a little while before prepping. Will be back soon as I can.

  1. No wonder you were dizzy, poor guy!

I hope the pacemaker makes you feel much better. Rest up!

  2. Fingers crossed for you, Mike! (And congrats again on both your Hugos, thoroughly deserved, and your perfectly-in-character class-act decision to decline any future nominations.)

  3. I hope for a smooth procedure and the best prognosis post-installation! Thinking healthful and healthy thoughts for you!

  4. Faux Scroll contributions:

San Jose Mercury – was this posted before? It’s about Jemisin’s lovely shawl! I mean that’s the photo; it’s about her; I mean, about the Hugos. About diversity in Hugos! 🙂 They misspelled Picacio as Picasio, though. 🙁

And Apple confirms the Foundation series, co-produced by Asimov’s daughter – not just being developed as previously reported, but they’ve apparently ordered a full season.

I will only post these two links ‘cuz I don’t want to trip any holds on my comment. 😉

  5. Hope everything goes in well!

Note, some of these devices have interaction issues, e.g., one friend, while he had one in temporarily, was told not to use (presumably, be near) their electric induction stove. Maybe not yours. I’m sure they’ll tell you.

Thankfully, your mimeo machine won’t be a problem. 🙂

  6. Is this to install the Big Heart award? I always assumed it was more metaphorical.

Good luck! Getting a knife in the chest is never a good thing but in this case it’s better than the alternative.

  7. Mike Glyer, fanzine host. A man very alive.

Gentlefolk, we can rebuild him. We have the technology. We have the capability to make the world’s first bionic fan. Mike Glyer will be that fan. Better than he was before. Better… stronger… faster…

    Be well, Mike! Best thoughts!

  8. Eek! Take your time, take it easy–we’ll be here, holding good thoughts and virtual beverages to welcome you home with.

  9. Best wishes, Mike! Best wishes also to Lee and PJ.

Have arrived in Omaha. Our hotel is literally next door to the tournament venue. They share a parking lot. Means I can go try out wheels on the floor during 8 AM free skate and then go back to the hotel room to rest until the team rallies at noon.

  10. Best wishes, Mike! I’m glad they found something to do that will help in the future. I am sans transportation to beautiful downtown SJ right now (yes, there’s buses but I’m not taking them there unless it’s an actual family member), but I know there are plenty of other fen who will look in on you. Enjoy the drugs. Take them when told to, you gotta keep ahead of the pain.

@Kendall: Nora is the only person who would not have been overshadowed by that cape. I am still worshiping it 4? days later.

@Nicole: Close hotels and resting is awesome! Keep the wheels down and the head up.

Big shout-out to everyone who was at The Big Kahuna’s Luau.

Filers should not miss the latest work by our OTHER Hugo finalist!

Mark-kitteh made an offhand remark about Sarah Gailey someday writing the Hugo-winning novel “Hippos Take Manhattan” and we all agreed we wanted to read that, and Camestros was forced to filk by his muse (not Timothy):

And if you like that one, please click through “Next” for one that’s even better, which I will not spoil by quoting all the good lines (Which is most of them).

  11. Best wishes and a speedy recovery, Mike. (I’d like to say something witty but the best jokes have already been taken.)

  12. Best wishes for a swift recovery, Mike!

@Nicole: Omaha is my hometown! I hope you enjoy your time there. If you like steak try to find time to have a steak dinner there; you can ask around for the local recommendations of where to go. (I haven’t lived there in years, so have nothing helpful to offer.) If you have a little time to sightsee, go to the Joslyn Art Musesum. The collection is nice and the building is a wonder: Prairie Egyptian Art Deco, in pink marble. If you have a lot of time, go the Henry Doorly Zoo–world-class all the way.

  13. I hope they are all done and you are recovering well, Mike.

Another friend told me she’d had a pacemaker for a year and it had worked really well for her. I hope yours will, too. I am sorry it hit in the middle of Worldcon, though, what timing! So frustrating.
