Ana Maria Curtis Wins 2019 Dell Magazines Award

The winner of the 2018 Dell Magazines Award for Undergraduate Excellence in Science Fiction and Fantasy Writing was announced on February 5.

Winner: Ana Maria Curtis of Swarthmore College for the story, “Military Sunset.”

First Runner-up: Cody D. Campbell of Oregon State University for the story, “Crossing Over.”

Second Runner-up: Wenmimareba Klobah Collins of the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras Campus for the story, “Unexplained Phenomena.”

Third Runner-up: Joseph O’Connor of Florida Gulf Coast University for the story, “Music in the Other Room.”

Honorable Mentions

  • Emmalee Gagnon of Arcadia University for the story, “Say Her Name.”
  • Josephine Su of the University of Alberta for the story, “The Gilding of the Stray.”
  • Claire Spaulding of Columbia University for the story, “Baucis.”
  • Arthur Davis of Swarthmore College for the story, “Gawain.”

The $500 award goes to the best unpublished and unsold science fiction or fantasy short story submitted by a full-time undergraduate college student. The winner is invited to the IAFA annual Conference on the Fantastic, and the winning story published in print or online by Asimov’s Science Fiction. (The Dell Award was formerly known as the Isaac Asimov Award.)

The award was started in 1992 by Asimov’s Science Fiction magazine editor Sheila Williams and science fiction writer and journalism professor Rick Wilber who are the co-judges.
