The Visual Effects Society released the nominations for the 2023 VES Awards on January 17.
The awards recognize outstanding visual effects artistry and innovation in features, animation, television, commercials and video games, and the VFX Supervisors, VFX Producers and hands-on Artists who bring this work to life.
Avatar: The Way Of Water leads the feature film field with a VES Awards record-breaking 14 nominations; Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio is the top animated contender with 6; and The Lord Of The Rings: The Rings Of Power leads the broadcast field with 7.
The nominees were selected by the 4,000 VES members worldwide and recognize VFX artistry in 25 categories spanning film, TV, animation, commercials and video games. The awards will be presented on February 15.

When you consider that all the finalists were genre films in the Outstanding Visual Effects in a Photoreal Feature category it’s not too shocking that Dune claimed the honor. Outstanding Visual Effects in a Photoreal Episode was won by Foundation.
Outstanding Visual Effects in an Animated Feature went to Encanto. The film also earned the prize for Outstanding Animated Character in an Animated Feature for Mirabel Madrigal.
A Lifetime Achievement Award was given to Lynwen Brennan, EVP and GM for Lucasfilm. Also, a Creative Excellence Award was given to Guillermo del Toro.

The Lion King, Baby Yoda, and Ridley Scott’s “Seven Worlds” ad for Hennessy X.O cognac all brought home hardware as genre ruled the roost at the Visual Effects Society’s 2020 VES Awards ceremony on January 29.
Along with The Mandalorian, Game of Thrones and Stranger Things won two trophies
apiece for short-form work.
As
previously announced, Martin Scorsese received the VES Lifetime Achievement
Award. The VES Visionary Award was given to Roland Emmerich, and the VES Award
for Creative Excellence was presented to VFX supervisor Sheena Duggal.

The Visual Effects Society released the nominations for the 2020 VES Awards on January 7.
The Lion King, Alita: Battle Angel, and Toy Story 4 lead all movie nominees with five apiece. The Mandalorian and the final season of HBO’s Game of Thrones lead the TV field with six nominations each.
Three of the The Mandalorian’s nominations
were for the character of “The Child,” better known to fans of the show as Baby
Yoda, or for the episode that bears his name.
CATS received zero nominations.
As previously announced, Martin Scorsese will receive the VES Lifetime Achievement
