Voting Opens for 2016 GUFF Delegate

GUFF voting has begun and will continue until September 30. Known as the Get Up-and-over Fan Fund or the Going Under Fan Fund, depending on which direction it’s running, GUFF exists to provide funds to enable well-known fans from Europe and Australasia to visit each other’s national conventions.

It’s a one-horse race this time –

Jukka Halme

Model 1967 recovering illustrator, editor, writer, reviewer, con runner, fanzine-fan etc, who is currently part of a bid to bring Worldcon to my hometown of Helsinki. Chaired three Finncons, been involved with a number of other conventions since 1989. Besides doing pretty much everything there is program-wise, does also mean quizzes at cons. Married, with two small dogs and an apartment filled with books. Never been to Australasia, but would love to see the place and meet the fandom. And have a pint or two with you. I might be persuaded NOT to bring Finnish candy with me!

Halme will attend Contact 2016 in Brisbane, Australia if elected.

GUFF Call For Nominations

GUFF, the Get Up and Over (or Going Under) Fan Fund that connects fans in Australasia and Europe, is taking nominations for the southbound race that will send a European fan to Contact 2016, the 55th Australian National Science Fiction Convention being held in Brisbane, Australia over the Easter weekend if 2016.

Contact the administrators if interested. To enter the race requires three Australasian and two European nominators (who will each need to confirm their nominations), a platform of no more than 100 words to appear on the ballot, a bond of £15/€20/AU$25 as a guarantee you will attend the 2016 Australian Natcon if elected.

Nominations are open until May 31. Send them to [email protected] or [email protected] or Mihaela-Marija Perkovi?, Maksimirska 100d, 10000 Zagreb, Croatia.  The bond can be sent by cheque to Mihaela at the above address, or by PayPal to [email protected], or contact her for bank deposit details. 2014 GUFF Ballot Online

2014 GUFF Nominees Sought

Nominations are being taken for the northbound GUFF race to bring an Australian fan to the 2014 Worldcon in London, Loncon 3.

GUFF is the Get Up and Over (or Going Under) Fan Fund which exchanges SF fans from Australasia and Europe.

Anyone interested in standing for GUFF must submit their nominators’ names (three Australasian, two European), a 100-word platform, and an A$25 bond to the administrators by November 15. See full qualifications here.

The GUFF delegate may also be able to make it to conventions being held before and after the Worldcon — Shamrokon, the 2014 Eurocon in Dublin, Ireland (August 22-24) and Nine Worlds in London (August 8-10).

Hertz: Let’s Get Ready for Some Auction

By John Hertz: The Fan Funds Auction at this year’s Worldcon, LoneStarCon 3 (28 Aug – 1 Sep, San Antonio, Texas), has been scheduled for Saturday afternoon 31 Aug. Have you anything you’d care to contribute?

If you’re attending, bring it. If you aren’t, consider sending it. A friend might bring it for you. At least one item, planned last year but only just ready, is being mailed to me so I can bring it. I’ve learned how things can be shipped to the con; call me (213) 384-6622 (land line, Pacific Daylight Time) and ask.

This traditional auction benefits our traveling-fan funds, which are maintained by various donations.

The senior fund is TAFF (Trans-Atlantic Fan Fund), sending fans in alternate directions each year between North America and the United Kingdom – Republic of Ireland – Europe since 1953. DUFF (Down Under Fan Fund) for North America – Australia & New Zealand, founded 1972, is the second side of a triangle. Third side is GUFF (between U.K. – Eire – Europe and ANZ; Going Under, or Get Up-and-over, Fan Fund, depending on the direction), founded 1978. There are sister funds, e.g. CUFF (Canadian Unity Fan Fund), FFANZ (Fan Fund of Australia & New Zealand).

The two trans-ocean funds touching the continent of LoneStarCon 3 are TAFF and DUFF. TAFF’s current NA Administrator is Jacq Monahan, visiting delegate Jim Mowatt; I’m the DUFF NA Adm’r, delegate Bill Wright. We’ll all be at the Auction. So will John Purcell who runs the Worldcon Fanzine Lounge this year. Other funds may be represented.

If your donation is labeled saying where proceeds go, they will; otherwise we’ll share them out. Consider also noting what makes your item of interest, what value it may have; we’re more diverse these days and people may not know. In the 2009 Worldcon Art Show, Jon Singer exhibited pots he’d made of clay from Neil Gaiman’s yard; everybody knows Jon Singer, but –

We’ll have to decide on the spot what order to auction things in and even whether to auction particular things at all. If your item’s not auctioned, we’ll dispose of it in our discretion unless you say otherwise (e.g. last year a rare copy of a Sam Moskowitz book didn’t arrive in time but raised money through a private donor’s putting it in a public-access university collection).

Oh, and you might want to buy things.

Perkovic Wins GUFF

Mihaela Marija Perkovic of Croatia has won the 2013 GUFF race and will attend Conflux, the 2013 Australian National Convention.

Perkovic received over 50% of the 86 first-place votes cast.

Fund administrators James Shields and Kylie Ding report no one voted Hold Over Funds.

This year’s race raised a total of AU$1,098.02.

Fans from 15 countries voted – Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Channel Islands, Croatia, Ireland, Italy, Malaysia, Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, UK, Ukraine, USA.

GUFF, created in 1979, exchanges fans between Europe and Australia, therefore is called the Get Up-and-over Fan Fund or the Going Under Fan Fund, depending on which direction it’s running. Well, honestly, for that very reason it’s always called GUFF even though the variable name is a cute idea…

2013 GUFF Race Begins

Voting is now open to choose the GUFF delegate Conflux, the 2013 Australian National Convention. Anyone can vote who was active in fandom prior to January 2011, and who contributes at least GBP5 or AUD8 (or the equivalent in other currencies) to the fund. Candidates for the Europe to Australasia race are: Julie McMurray and Mihaela Marija Perkovi?.

Julie McMurray: I’ve been in Fandom since 1989 starting out in media fandom. Then I went to Novacon 23 and was completely drawn in by the diversity of the conventions and amazing people I met. I volunteered from my first convention doing all sorts of fun and exciting stuff. My passion is travelling and meeting people and I’ve always dreamed of going to Australia. Some of my favourite authors include Shaun Tan & Garth Nix. I love reading, larping and volunteering. I’d love to travel to Australia and have an active trip meeting fans, promoting European fandom and worldcon/loncon3 in London 2014.

Mihaela Marija Perkovi?: A Croatian fan who is downright crazy about Australia; she earned her degree with a paper on “SF tropes in Peter Carey’s short fiction”. Active in fandom since 2004, she has participated at Croatian conventions as lecturer, moderator and GoH host. She runs the SFERA Award Jury and writing workshops, is PR manager of SFera and SFeraKon, and coordinated Kontakt Special Track at Eurocon 2012. Enthusiastic, cheerful and chatty, she is an active blogger and lousy photographer. She plans to attend Swancon and Conflux, visit Sydney, Melbourne and New Zealand. Her report will be fun to read.

Mihaela’s nominators are Cheryl Morgan, Carolina Gómez Lagerlöf, Cristian Tamas, Anna Hepworth and Adrian Smith.

[From the press release by James Shields]: GUFF is the Going Under (or Get Up and Over) Fan Fund which transports SF fans from Europe to Australasia (and vice versa). Nominations are now open for the southbound race, to transport a European fan (or fans) to Conflux, the 2013 Australian National Convention (NatCon), to be held at the Rydges Capital Hill in Barton, Canberra, on 25th to 28th April 2013. Depending on the length of trip they’re able to make, the winner could also consider attending Swancon in Perth (29th March to 1st April) and/or Au Contraire 2 in Wellington (12th to 14th July). The winner will also be required to take over the administration of the fund for the next northbound and southbound races.

You will then need three European and two Australasian nominators (who will each need to confirm their nominations), a 100-word platform to appear on the ballot, and a bond of £15/€20/AU$25  guaranteeing to attend the 2013 Natcon if you win. Nominations are open until Thursday 11th October 2012, and candidates will be announced on Saturday 23th October at Octocon in Dublin. Voting will then run until Monday 7th January 2013, with the winner announced at GenghisCon in Perth, Western Australia on 13th January.
