Tähtivaeltaja Award 2019 Shortlist

The Tähtivaeltaja (“Star Rover”) Award finalists have been posted. The award goes to the best science fiction book published in Finland in the previous year.

The nominees were selected by a jury of journalist Hannu Blommila, editor Toni Jerrman, critic Elli Leppä, and critic Kaisa Ranta. The award winner will be announced in April.

  • Johannes Anyuru: He hukkuvat äitiensä kyyneliin (De kommer att drunkna i sina mödrars tårar; The Rabbit Yard. Translated to Finnish by Outi Menna, S&S)
  • Cixin Liu: Kolmen kappaleen probleema. Muistoja planeetta maasta 1 (The Three Body Problem, Santi, Translated to Finnish by Rauno Sainio, Aula & Co)
  • Hannu Rajaniemi: Kesämaa (Summerland, translated to Finnish by Tero Valkonen, Gummerus)
  • George Saunders: Lincoln bardossa (Lincoln in the Bardo, translated to Finnish by Kaijamari Sivill, Siltala)
  • Rivers Solomon: Menneisyyden kaiku (An Unkindness of Ghosts, translated to Finnish by Einari Aaltonen, Like)

  • Heikki Kännö: Mehiläistie (Sammakko)
  • Jukka Laajarinne: Pinnan alla pimeä (Atena)
  • David Mitchell: Luukellot (Sammakko, suom. Einari Aaltonen)
  • Jani Saxell: Tuomiopäivän karavaani (WSOY)

2017 Tähtivaeltaja Award

Helsinki Science Fiction Society announced in May the winner of the Tähtivaeltaja Award for best science fiction book published in Finland last year.

The winning book is:

  • Zoo City – Eläinten valtakunta (Zoo City) by Lauren Beukes (published by Aula & co.)

The other nominees were:

  • Maailman lahjakkain tyttö (The Girl with All the Gifts) by M. R. Carey (Like)
  • Näkymättömät planeetat (Invisible Planets: Collected Fiction) by Hannu Rajaniemi (Gummerus)
  • Poseidonin lapset (Poseidon’s Wake) by Alastair Reynolds (Like)
  • Sotapuiston perikato (CivilWarLand in Bad Decline) by George Saunders (Siltala)

The award jury consisted of journalist Hannu Blommila, editor Toni Jerrman, critic Elli Leppä, and critic Antti Oikarinen.

Last year’s winner was Margaret Atwood’s novel New Country.

SF Awards at Finncon 2016

At Finland’s national sf convention, Finncon 2016, the following awards were presented for the best science fiction, fantasy and translated works.

Atorox Award

The Atorox Award goes to the best Finnish sf short story published in the previous year. The year’s top three stories were selected by 62 participating voters:

  1. Magdalena Hai: Kaunis Ululian (Kristallimeri. Osuuskumma)
  2. Oskari Rantala: Didin historiat (Portti 4/14)
  3. Tuukka Tenhunen: Ugrilainen tapaus (Spin 4/14)

Atorox the robot appeared in a series of stories by Aarne Haapakoski (1904–1961), one of the first sf writers in Finland.

Tähtifantasia Award

The Tähtifantasia Award is given by the Helsinki Science Fiction Society for the best translated fantasy book published in Finnish during the previous year.

The 2016 winner was Shaun Tan’s collection of short stories for children, Etäisten esikaupunkien asioita (Tales from Outer Suburbia, 2009).

The award jury members were critics Jukka Halme, Aleksi Kuutio, Anne Leinonen, and a representative of Risingshadow.netin, Osmo Määttä.

Announced in May, the winning book was Uusi maa (MaddAddam) by Margaret Atwood, translated into Finnish by Kristiina Drews and published by Otava.
