Matching Funds Available for Heinlein Bust Donations

hall of famous missouriansThe Heinlein Prize Trust will partner with The Heinlein Society to raise money for the new Robert A. Heinlein bust to be displayed in the “Hall of Famous Missourians” at the Missouri state capitol.

The Trust has pledged to match dollar-for-dollar contributions made by “Heinlein’s Children” to pay for the bust, associated plaque, pedestal, and ceremony.

Heinlein Society logoThe Heinlein Society’s board needs $14,000 to do the job. With the Trust’s help, fans of Robert A. Heinlein need to contribute $7,000 to achieve the goal.

Please make donations to this cause by using the Paypal buttons at the THS site and designating “Hall of Famous Missourians”, or send a check payable to The Heinlein Society at 3553 Atlantic Avenue, #341, Long Beach, CA 90807-5606. All donations pledged for this cause will only be used for this purpose, and THS has previously announced they will meet the goal or return all funds to donors by December 31, 2016.

Spotlight on The Heinlein Society

Heinlein Society logoKeith Kato was elected the fourth President of The Heinlein Society at its September 7, 2014 meeting. He succeeded LA-area fan and LASFS member Michael Sheffield, who chose not to run for the Board again.

Keith is someone I have known for over 40 years — and he has played host to many of you at his famed Worldcon chili parties. Keith hopes you will help him fund Heinlein’s bust for the Hall of Famous Missourians (click here).

In addition to President Keith Kato, the Society’s other new officers are Minnesota fan Geo Rule as Vice President-Secretary, and Baltimore fan John Tilden as Treasurer. The Board of Directors (in order of elected seniority) consists of Joe Haldeman, Jerry Pournelle, Michael Cassutt, Connie Willis, Washington fan John Seltzer, and Texas fan Betsey Wilcox.

Heinlein Fans Asked To Dig Deep

Heinlein-faceRobert A. Heinlein was one of four additions to the Hall of Famous Missourians in 2013, but he is the only one whose bust has yet to be installed in the capitol.

Missouri’s rule is that the bust must be paid for by the public (not the state) and the funds have yet to be raised. Now The Heinlein Society is stepping up to see that the job is finished.

The Society’s Paypal link (see “I want to Pay it Forward” at top right of Home page) now includes a dedicated selection for “Hall of Famous Missourians Bust” with example amounts. A second donate button is free form if you don’t see one of the example amounts that matches your generosity and desire to “Pay it Forward!” in memory of Robert A. Heinlein. Checks may also be sent to the Society’s mailing address at 3553 Atlantic Avenue, #341, Long Beach, CA 90807-5606. Just indicate “Hall of Famous Missourians” in the memo field of your check.

Last year a staffer for the Missouri Speaker of the House told me the cost of the components would be: bust, $9,500; base, $2,000; and plaque, $250. The Heinlein Society’s latest estimate, including the cost of the award ceremony, is reported in the $12,000-$20,000 range.
