Genre films dominated when the Visual Effects Society presented the 2024 VES Awards at a ceremony on February 21.
The Creator led the field, winning five categories, including Outstanding VFX in a Photoreal Feature. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse followed with four awards, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 picked up two.
The Visual Effects Society released the nominations for the 2024 VES Awards on January 16.
Disney’s The Creator and Sony’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse lead the field with seven nominations each; HBO’s The Last of Us tops TV series with six.
The VES Awards recognize VFX artistry in 25 categories spanning film, TV, animation, commercials and video games.
The award winners will be announced on February 21. VES has nearly 5,000 members from 45 countries.

When you consider that all the finalists were genre films in the Outstanding Visual Effects in a Photoreal Feature category it’s not too shocking that Dune claimed the honor. Outstanding Visual Effects in a Photoreal Episode was won by Foundation.
Outstanding Visual Effects in an Animated Feature went to Encanto. The film also earned the prize for Outstanding Animated Character in an Animated Feature for Mirabel Madrigal.
A Lifetime Achievement Award was given to Lynwen Brennan, EVP and GM for Lucasfilm. Also, a Creative Excellence Award was given to Guillermo del Toro.

apiece for short-form work.

The Visual Effects Society released the nominations for the 2020 VES Awards on January 7.
The Lion King, Alita: Battle Angel, and Toy Story 4 lead all movie nominees with five apiece. The Mandalorian and the final season of HBO’s Game of Thrones lead the TV field with six nominations each.
Three of the The Mandalorian’s nominations
were for the character of “The Child,” better known to fans of the show as Baby
Yoda, or for the episode that bears his name.
CATS received zero nominations.
As previously announced, Martin Scorsese will receive the VES Lifetime Achievement
