A Hive With Good Beer

Thanks to Greg Machlin for organizing tonight’s File 770 meetup at the Saranac, two blocks from the convention center.

I took a cab over — yes, it was unnecessary — driven by a cabbie who’d been on the job for only two weeks, drove a total of about five miles around the downtown network of one-way streets trying to find the place. She made up for it by insisting on confusing me with George R.R. Martin, whose photo she’d just seen in the weekly pop culture paper (because of our white beards), and asking me questions about my writing.

When I arrived at the Saranac there were about 25 fans already contentedly drinking beer and talking up a storm. I remember a lot of the names of those I talked to, but because lots of you post under a handle I probably shouldn’t blab all those names. I’ll just say I enjoyed meeting you very much. Special thanks to Daniel Dern for my yellow button that reads: “File 770, That Wretched Hive of Scum and Villainy.” (The food and beer at the Saranac is good, too!)

There were a couple other unexpected highlights.

At one point I looked through a window and saw David Hartwell, in full plaid regalia, taking a table with a couple other folks.

Then, on my way out, I passed Lou Antonelli and quickly introduced myself. Talk about a small world!

File 770 Issue #163 Available

File770-163I couldn’t let a year go by without a new issue of File 770 and, with creative help from Taral, John Hertz and John King Tarpinian, I managed to get one done just before the last page was torn from the calendar.

File 770 #163 [PDF file] boasts Taral’s diplomatic memoir about his brief time as an artist for an sf publisher, a full LoneStarCon 3 report from John Hertz, and Martin Morse Wooster’s account of Readercon 24, the first one since It Happened.

This is an especially good a day to visit to Bill Burns’ eFanzines site. The latest three zines to be posted, besides my own, are Robert Lichtman’s Trap Door #29, Steven H Silver’s Argentus #13 — and Journey Planet #18, guest edited by Helen Montgomery, where anonymous contributors say what they think about the effects of social media on fandom.

File 770 Issue #159: Anatomy of a Fanzine

Cover by Alan White for File 770 #159

The April 2011 issue of File 770 is now available in PDF.

Alan White’s cover leads off Issue #159, a dramatic color tribute to Weird Tales.

The art inside is by Taral, Alexis Gilliland, Alan Beck, Steve Stiles, Brad Foster and Bill Rotsler. Photos have been contributed by Robert Sawyer, Andrew Porter, Diana Glyer, Helen Montgomery, Marty Cantor, John King Tarpinian, Lynn Maudlin, and the late Bruce Pelz.

The issue is posted here in four sections because I’m forced to work around WordPress’ size limit on uploaded files. I have asked Bill Burns to post it on eFanzines as well, which I expect will happen when he comes back from Eastercon.

I. File_770_159_pages_1-23 [PDF file]

I hope there won’t be restrictions on how many megabytes people can download from this site. I haven’t used this arrangement before — we will all find out together!
