The Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America has announced the nominees for the 50th Annual Nebula Awards, the Ray Bradbury Award for Outstanding Dramatic Presentation, and the Andre Norton Award for Outstanding Young Adult Science Fiction or Fantasy Book. C.J. Cherryh Named SFWA Damon Knight Grand Master

The Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America has selected C. J. Cherryh as the 32nd Damon Knight Grand Master for her contributions to the literature of Science Fiction and Fantasy.

The Damon Knight Memorial Grand Master Award is given by SFWA for “lifetime achievement in science fiction and/or fantasy.”

Cherryh joins the Grand Master ranks alongside such legends as Gene Wolfe, Anne McCaffrey, Ursula K. LeGuin, Isaac Asimov, Ray Bradbury, and Joe Haldeman.

C.J. Cherryh won the John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer in 1977 and three Hugo Awards, including the Best Novel Award for Cyteen and Downbelow Station. In 1998, Cherryh was the Guest of Honor at the World Science Fiction Convention. In addition to her Hugo winning works, Cherryh is the author of The Faded Sun series, the long-running Foreigner series, and the Chanur books. Her writing spans the breadth from space opera to historical fantasy.

Cherryh responded, “I never expected this. I’m honored to join the ranks of so many illustrious writers. I have a lot of books left to write, a lot of books I want to write, stories I want to tell. I thank my publishers, who keep me in print—I thank my agent, as well. I thank everybody, profoundly, who gives me the chance to do that. And I plan to keep the books coming.”

SFWA President Cat Rambo said, “As a longtime reader and re-reader of Cherryh’s works, I am thrilled beyond measure to be able to recognize her contribution to the field in this way. She is a master of long-running series involving worlds and characters that the reader can visit and revisit with a true sense of wonder each and every time.”

Cherryh’s award will be presented at the 51st SFWA Nebula Conference in Chicago, IL, May 12-15, 2016 as will the Nebula Awards. On May 13, a mass autograph session will take place at the Palmer House and is open to the public.

50th Annual Nebula Awards Weekend

SFWA’s 50th Annual Nebula Awards Weekend runs June 4-7 at the Palmer House Hilton in Chicago. On the schedule are tours, workshops, programming, and the Nebula Awards Ceremony. Price info and event details are here.

The Group Autographing Session on Friday, June 5 is free and open to the public. Participants includeg Parks and Rec’s Nick Offerman, author and former NFL punter Chris Kluwe, and China’s science fiction superstar, Cixin Liu.

Larry Niven Named SFWA Grand Master

SFWA has honored Larry Niven with the Damon Knight Memorial Grand Master Award “for his invaluable contributions to the field of science fiction and fantasy.”

“I’ve always wanted one of these,” responded Niven. “It does definitely mean I’ve gotten old. I’ve been publishing fiction for more than fifty years now. I’m convinced I picked the right career.”

Niven won SFWA’s Nebula Award in 1971 for Ringworld (which also won the Hugo). His eight career Nebula nominations include two stories that made the very first Nebula shortlist (1966). His many other honors include five Hugos and five Seiun Awards.

Niven’s fabled ability to transform hard science into cosmic predicaments has enriched his Known Space series. His wild imagination also has given the sf and fantasy fields gems like “Inconstant Moon,” “The Magic Goes Away,” “All The Myriad Ways,” the humorous essay “Man of Steel, Woman of Kleenex,” and the teleportation stories from which the word “flash mob” is taken.

He has collaborated with several authors, most notably Jerry Pournelle, who explicitly credits Niven for coming up with great scenes in their books like the surfer riding a tsunami caused by the impact of Lucifer’s Hammer.

Apropos of the day, Harlan Ellison has sounded a bugle call summoning all within hearing to join him in demanding that Norman Spinrad be selected a SFWA Grandmaster. Ellison wrote in his online forum:

I ask that you put aside for just one day, your usual tweets, blasts, replies, fill-in replies, facebook trivia, yelps, hoots, whatever…and go to every Infobahn contact you possess — SFWA threads, previous Grandmasters, Worldcon members, writer of all sorts, friends and e.contacts, past presidents or officials of SFWA (or the secret Sanhedrin assembling the list of “potential nominees” and initiate a Petition to be signed by Grandmaster Laureates — you may, with my permission put me on that list — and start it viral today.

Let Paul Di Filippo know. Let Norman (who has e.mail and Facebook pages or somesuch), who is in Paris now, with Dona, let HIM know this is fulminating. Tell Buzz Dixon to spread it. Alert Jerry Pournelle and David Gerrold and Robin Wayne Bailey and Robert Silverberg and anyone else you might think even tangentially useful.

Although his broadside refers to Paul Di Filippo’s review of Osama the Gun appearing “yesterday” it was actually posted October 9 — the same day Ellison had his stroke. That suggests to me Harlan may have had this draft in the works just before he was hospitalized.
